You might have seen the diamond studded cellphones, the Swarovski-coated BMWs, or golden toilet seats of the new Russian oligarch class. But do not be fooled! The original bling bling style was really launched in Russia in around 300 years ago when Peter the Great built Saint Petersburg in order “to open a window to Europe”.
It was a very shiny window, with various palaces full of gold, precious stones, and all sorts of items that you can probably buy on AliBaba these days.
The below chandelier hangs in the Summer – Peterhof Palace, which was partially destroyed and looted by the Germans during WWII. The Russian government finally restored the palace in 2003 (for St. Pete’s 300 years celebration) and brought it back to its pimpilicious glory.
